Q STEP 1: In this class, we will be discussing opinions and facts. While I urge you all to have opinions on controversial issues, I also want you to base your opinions on facts and not feelings. Thus, it is important to know the difference between an opinion and a fact. It is also important to know the difference between being allowed to express an opinion and understanding what makes an opinion valid. For this discussion, read Stoke' article "No, You're Not Entitled to Your Opinion" STEP 2: According to Stokes, opinion "ranges from tastes or preferences, through views about questions that concern most people such as prudence or politics, to views grounded in technical expertise, such as legal or scientific opinions". In your discussion response or 150 words, please answer the following: What is your definition of a valid opinion? (Please cite your source by using quotation marks around borrowed phrases and include a link to the source at the bottom of your post). Do you feel that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion? Why or why not? Since opinions are subjective, what purpose do they serve in an academic argument essay? Explain your answer. Your response should include a clear stance on the issue with supporting evidence as to why you feel the way you do. Show that you can think critically on the topic by integrating your own thoughts, analysis, or experiences.
